In order to improve the repairability of Apple AirPods Pro, hardware prototyping consultant Ken Pillonel switched the Lightning charging port to a USB-C port by 3D printing the charging box shell.

The foreign repair team iFixit gave Apple AirPods Pro a repairability score of 0 (out of 10, the higher the score, the easier it is to repair). Pillonel once again emphasized in the video shared that although the Apple AirPods Pro charging box is easier to open than AirPods, there is still no guarantee that the charging box can be opened without damaging the components.

After developing similar solutions for the first and second generation AirPods, Pillonel sought to create a solution that would give new life to the AirPods Pro charging case that wouldn't open.

Pillonel has created a downloadable 3D printed replacement shell (available on GitHub) to allow technicians to purposefully open existing shells to access the internal structure and perform repairs.

Pillonel suggests that, as a standard port, USB-C on AirPods Pro increases the likelihood of long-term repairability. IT House inquired about Pillonel’s previous similar mobile phone port modifications: including adding a USB-C port to the iPhone and adding a Lightning port to the Samsung Galaxy A51.
