There are various interfaces on the market today, adapted to different devices. STMicroelectronics’ TCPP01-M12 port protection chip allows designers to easily upgrade small electronic device data cables from older USB® Micro-A or Micro-B data cables to the latest Type-C interface cables. The TCPP01-M12 port protection chip meets all electrical protection requirements for USB-C™ connection technology.

TCPP01-M12 is a microcontroller (MCU) companion chip that works with the 20V/100W USB Type-C Power Delivery controller of STMicroelectronics’ STM32G0 and STM32G4 MCUs. It can also be managed by general-purpose MCUs such as STM32 and STM8. Only the 5V interface provides electrical protection. Each application scenario only requires TCPP01-M12 and MCU, providing a cost-effective and space-effective solution.

The design of TCPP01-M12 draws on demand feedback from mass market customers to simplify the modernization and upgrade of various product equipment, such as: industrial computers, mobile POS terminal payment equipment, medical equipment, wearable devices, wall chargers, automotive information Entertainment equipment, gaming terminals, drones, audio/video systems, gateways, computers and peripherals.

Comprehensive protection features include faulty power adapter protection to prevent equipment damage caused by faulty power supplies using incorrect power parameters. There is also short-circuit protection between the VBUS pin and the configuration channel (CC) line, providing IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 + 8 kV ESD electrostatic protection for the VBUS and CC pins.

Other advantages of this chip are that if no cable is connected, the TCPP01-M12 enters a zero-power operating state, thereby extending battery life; it uses the USB PD Programmable Power Supply (PPS) in an innovative way to charge the device faster Faster. The IC also integrates an external N-channel load switch driver circuit to save bill-of-materials costs. Additionally, overall heat dissipation is minimized by leveraging PPS support and the inherently low on-resistance of N-channel switches compared to commonly used P-channel MOSFETs. TCPP01-M12 is now in production and comes in QFN12 package. The above is the comprehensive protection of STMicroelectronics USB Type-C port protection IC, which simplifies the data line upgrade process of mass market devices.
