According to foreign media reports, after Canada's The Globe and Mail reported that BlackBerry sold 90 key smartphone technology patents to Huawei, BlackBerry Chief Financial Officer Steve Rai confirmed the news at a JPMorgan online investor conference yesterday.
According to the USPTO, ownership of these patents was transferred to Huawei on December 23. Speaking about the transaction, Steve Rai pointed out that this is "only a very small portion of patents that are no longer relevant to the business. Therefore, this is a small transaction and is not part of our regular transactions. Of course, this transaction is permitted by applicable rules."

Since BlackBerry launched its BlackBerry Technology Solutions (BTS) business unit in 2014, the company has been doing its best to license or sell its 38,000 patents, including those from QNX, Certicom, Paratek and others.
After experiencing a market loss, BlackBerry withdrew from the mobile phone business in 2016 and shifted its focus to enterprise, Internet of Things and security software. Its mobile phone brand was initially licensed to TCL Communication and then taken over by startup OnwardMobility.
