# 3D printer project - STM32F7508-DK environment creation (I) I found out from the Internet that smoothieware.org launched a FreeRTOS system V2. I have always wanted to try it out. It happened that [**Electronic Engineering World**](https://www.eeworld.com.cn/) held the **Digital Electronics Innovation Design Competition** event. I am grateful to the organizer for giving me a place. So I decided to make a 3D printer control system that uses STM32F7508-DK as the main controller and UI display, and ESP32 as a WIFI device to communicate through USART. ## The project plan uses Smoothie ware v2.0 as the main platform framework software for 3D printer control, and adds a graphical user interface based on LVGL. ### Introduction to Smoothie The original Smoothie platform is a GCC platform software based on the FreeRTOS embedded operating system using the STM32H745 chip, including FatFS file system, PID temperature control, open source, highly modular, high-performance G code interpreter and CNC, 3D printer, laser cutting controller written in object-oriented C++. The author of LVGL is Gábor Kiss-Vámosi from Budapest, Hungary. Kiss published it on GitHub in 2016. At that time, it was called LittlevGL instead of LVGL, and later the author changed it to LVGL. Like most open source projects, it started as a one-person project. The STM32F7508-DK Discovery Board is a complete demonstration and development platform designed for the STM32F750N8H6 microcontroller based on the STMicroelectronics Arm Cortex-M7 core. The microcontroller has - Four I2Cs, six SPIs with three multiplexed simplex I2S, SDMMC, four USARTs, four UARTs, two CANs, three 12-bit ADCs, two 12-bit DACs, two SAIs, 8- to 14-bit digital camera module interface, - Internal 320+16+4-Kb SRAM and 64-Kb flash memory, - USB OTG HS and FS, Ethernet MAC, FMC interface, Quad-SPI interface, SWD debug support. The chip integrates an Xtensa 32-bit LX7 dual-core processor, an ultra-low-power coprocessor, a Wi-Fi baseband, a Bluetooth baseband, an RF module, and peripherals. ESP32-S3 supports WIFI and Bluetooth, and can be used as a peripheral to collaborate with the STM32F750 through USART communication. The first software platform used was Visual Stdio 2022 + VisualGDB, mainly because Smooth programming is C++ language, and Visual Stdio has strong debugging functions. However, since the built-in FLASH of STM32F750 is only 64k, various methods (BOOT method, mixed method) were used for more than a month without success, and finally had to give up. After trying various solutions, ARM Keil MDK was finally used as the debugger, ARMCLANG V6 compiler, based on LLVM and Clang technology. Visual Stdio Code is used for code editing and viewing. STM32CubeMX is used as the basic code, chip pin allocation, and clock setting software of STM32F7508-DK. I originally tried the mixed mode, which was successful for FreeRTOS+LVGL alone, but after adding the Smooth module, the built-in FLASH space was not enough, probably because the C++ support runtime library was too large. I can only use the Bootloader plus APP method, with the Bootloader placed in the internal FLASH and the APP placed in the external FLASH. However, this method also encountered several big pitfalls during development, which delayed a full month, but fortunately it was successful in the end.
