As the world becomes more interconnected and more reliant on digital technology, cybercrime is on the rise. In fact, Forbes reports that data breaches in 2023 increased 72% from 2021, which was already a record year. As cyber threats become more sophisticated and frequent, businesses must take a proactive approach to protecting their systems, data, and operations.
One approach includes implementing cyber resilience: the ability to resist, respond to, and recover from attacks, resulting in continuous protection and minimal disruption.
Every October, CISA.gov (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) launches Cybersecurity Awareness Month to promote a culture of cyber resilience. At Lattice, we are committed to helping our customers and partners use FPGA technology to cope with the ever-changing cybersecurity environment, so we attach great importance to this annual theme event. After all, this is a great opportunity for us to promote our innovative FPGA solutions, which bring strong security, comprehensive toolkits and Lattice Cyber Resilience Program, providing enterprises with easy-to-implement, scalable and adaptable tools to provide them with continuous protection.
Comprehensive Lattice FPGA Solutions: A Shield of Defense on the Cyber Battlefield
FPGAs with advanced security features can serve as an efficient Hardware Root of Trust (HRoT) in computer systems, providing tamper-resistant components to ensure safety and integrity. FPGAs combine reliability and flexibility, making them ideal security engines for industries that are in urgent need of strong security solutions. The Lattice MachXO3D™ and Lattice Mach™-NX families are examples of HRoT, providing a trusted, tamper-resistant foundation for system security. These devices have a dedicated hardcore security engine with a secure, immutable unique ID. This ensures that the core functions and critical components of the system are rooted in the silicon root of trust, which can verify their authenticity and non-tampering, reducing the risk of unauthorized access or malicious tampering. In addition, like all Lattice FPGAs, they excel in small size and low power consumption, which are key factors in system design across industries.
According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines, Platform Firmware Resilience (PFR) is another key requirement for maintaining network resilience. FPGAs can use PFR mechanisms to ensure the integrity and authenticity of firmware throughout system operation. The Lattice Sentry™ solution stack helps minimize the vulnerability of firmware attacks within the system by providing real-time, dynamic protection, detection, and recovery capabilities. Lattice Sentry includes a complete reference platform, fully verified IP building blocks, easy-to-use FPGA design tools, reference designs/demonstrations, and a custom design service network. The solution includes all the resources system designers need to evaluate, develop, test, and deploy FPGA-based PFR RoTs that comply with the NIST SP800-193 standard.
In addition, over the past decade, the development of 5G and next-generation networks has driven changes in network architectures across industries, one of the most notable of which is the shift to open radio access networks (ORAN). ORAN allows telecom companies to combine components from multiple vendors, thereby increasing flexibility, reducing costs, and accelerating the implementation of new features. However, this shift increases security risks. The Lattice ORAN™ solution portfolio addresses these challenges by providing advanced security, precise synchronization, and efficient hardware acceleration, helping to evolve to software-defined networks (SDN) and disaggregated networks. This comprehensive suite ensures stable, secure, timing-compliant, and energy-efficient small cell deployments, reflecting Lattice's innovative efforts in ORAN deployment.
Lattice Cyber Resilience Initiative: Bringing you the latest security insights
At Lattice, we believe that staying ahead in cybersecurity requires continuous learning and collaboration. That’s why we launched the Cyber Resilience Initiative, a platform where we publish security-related content discussing the latest trends, challenges, and solutions in the security space.
The program includes quarterly security workshops with a range of industry experts, customers and partners. Through these workshops, Lattice will help companies navigate the rapidly changing environment and remain compliant with evolving regulatory requirements. We provide insights, best practices and practical solutions to enable our customers and partners to build more secure and resilient systems.
Our recent safety-focused seminars and workshops include:
-
From TPM to Caliptra: Redefining the Future Root of Trust Architecture (October 2024)
-
Security Trends and Vendor Spotlight Secure-IC: A Great Panel Discussion at Embedded World 2024 (June 2024)
-
Insights into the Changing Cybersecurity Landscape (October 2023)
In addition, we regularly publish blogs about the latest security trends and standards. In the latest blog post, we evaluated the new NIST PQC standards that the market has been looking forward to. The article outlines the impact of these standards and the basic steps for system designers to effectively transition to PQC. Click here to read the full blog.
Shaping a more secure cyber future
Our commitment to helping businesses navigate the ever-changing cybersecurity landscape has seen us receive several prestigious industry awards this past year, in addition to a number of other awards we’ve received over the past few years.
At Lattice, we are committed to continuously developing new FPGA technologies and improving our existing FPGA products and solutions to stay ahead of emerging cyber threats. As we celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month, it is important to recognize that building cyber resilience is an ongoing work in progress. By working together, we can take proactive steps to create a more secure future.
