The 2019 IMT-2020 (5G) Summit, hosted by the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group of the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), was officially held in Beijing today. The two-day summit revolved around the theme of "5G Commercialization and Win-Win Future", focusing on 5G commercialization and application innovation, sharing the latest achievements and views, and displaying the latest 5G commercial products, in response to China's official entry into the first year of 5G commercialization in 2019. As an active member of the China Communications Standards Association, Microwave Vision Group (MVG), a world-leading manufacturer of antenna test and measurement systems, was also invited to participate in the summit to discuss with the experts the latest progress, solutions and trends in the most cutting-edge 5G antenna test technology, standards, R&D, etc.
For more than a decade, MVG has been active in the development of antenna test and measurement standards for the international telecommunications standards committee CTIA and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) working group. MVG also participates in the work of the Active Antenna (AAS) OTA Test Working Group and the Air MIMO (MIMO-OTA) Test Working Group to provide expert opinions and test assistance to promote the formulation and release of standards. In the process of the global hot 5G commercialization, MVG has also been a major participant and contributor to the wireless 5G - New Radio (NR) telecommunications standardization organization in the 3GPP organization. MVG aims to work with professional institutions and companies at home and abroad to jointly diagnose 5G test technology and seek to break through technical bottlenecks.
MVG has been deeply involved in the Chinese market since 2003. The Group has always adhered to the belief of fairness, reciprocity and integrity and has established a lasting, deep and friendly cooperative relationship with the Chinese antenna test and measurement industry ecosystem. MVG has been investing in technology research and development for many years, with R&D investment accounting for nearly 10% of the Group's operating income. Since joining the China Communications Standards Association in recent years, MVG has made professional contributions based on its years of experience in cooperation with international communications standardization organizations, and has actively participated in various activities of the China Communications Standards Association to promote the construction of China's 5G standardization.
As we all know, the test environment has changed dramatically in the 5G era. From a technical perspective, the spectrum efficiency of 5G will be 5-15 times that of 4G, and the peak data rate will reach gigabits per second. Many new technologies, including millimeter wave, beamforming, and ultra-wideband technology, have emerged and need to be tested and measured through solutions that meet the 5G NR standard. Developing and optimizing the design, prototyping, and deployment of wireless products that meet the 5G NR standard, and bringing products to market quickly and reliably, is an epoch-making technical challenge for the RF and microwave test and measurement industry.
MVG's unique multi-probe system is based on rapid sampling and uses an array of amplitude and phase probes of the radiated near field on a closed surface around the device. The far field performance of the device is determined by the near field-to-far field transformation. The exact knowledge of the radiated amplitude and phase of the device can also be used to further verify the RF behavior of the device through post-processing.
MVG test systems based on this technology have been successfully deployed at customer production sites around the world, proving their value in supporting 5G device development. Customers around the world have given high praise to MVG's 5G test solutions, such as Taiwan TMYTEK Co., Ltd. (TMYTEK), which used StarLab 50 GHz to test its latest beamformer box (BBox) prototype. Ethan Lin, the company's vice president and project director, praised the collaboration:
"As a research and development test tool, the BBox needs to be finely calibrated for both guided testing and over-the-air (OTA) testing. For many years, MVG has been a leader in OTA testing, and StarLab 50 GHz has proven to be the perfect technology to meet our needs."

Among the many links in 5G R&D, standard setting is undoubtedly the top priority, which requires the participation and contribution of standardization organizations, enterprises, government departments and relevant parties in the entire upstream and downstream industries. As an important part of its localization strategy, MVG will continue to deepen its cooperation with the China Communications Standards Association, work with partners, and use innovative technologies to provide customers with more efficient and flexible turnkey solutions to help 5G take off.
