Some Tesla owners reportedly said that the central control USB port of the car they received was gone, leaving only a small hole, and wireless charging did not work. The owners were dumbfounded when they wanted to charge their mobile phones.

One of the car owners commented on Musk's social platform: His Model Y Performance high-performance version was delivered yesterday, but it lacked a USB-C port and the wireless charging function could not be used. He said he was disappointed that Tesla did not communicate this matter to him in advance. It is understood that the affected models include Model 3 and Model Y.

Tesla responded to the owners' complaints: Due to a shortage of parts, affected owners can call to schedule a service appointment and then reinstall the USB port, which is expected to be in December, but the specific time cannot be 100% guaranteed. As for the USB-C port, Tesla said it has informed some affected owners.

In fact, in the context of the global chip shortage, Tesla is not the only one that delivers models first and then installs parts on the vehicles later. Earlier, Ideal Auto and Xiaopeng Motors both introduced new delivery plans, first delivering models that lack millimeter-wave radars, and then installing them after the millimeter-wave radars arrive.

A few days ago, foreign media reported that due to the chip shortage, BMW has cancelled the touch screen function of some of its models, including the 3 Series, 4 Series Coupe/Convertible/Gran Coupe (except i4), Z4, X5, X6 and X7 SUVs, which means that users can only operate the central control screen through voice recognition or iDrive controller. In addition, BMW said that owners of some models that have cancelled the touch screen function due to chip shortage will be given $500 worth of points, which users can directly spend in the BMW mobile app.

In addition, many foreign automakers have also chosen different solutions to deal with the impact of chip shortages on vehicle delivery. In April of this year, General Motors announced that it would no longer equip the fuel management module in the 2021 new pickup models, and its price would be reduced accordingly. Peugeot cancelled the LCD instrument panel for the new generation Peugeot 308 launched at the end of May, and said that the saved chips would be used on the new 3008 model. In early October, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would no longer guarantee full configuration for all new cars due to chip shortages.

Earlier, many industry insiders expected that the chip shortage problem would ease in the third quarter of this year. However, according to the latest data from AutoForecastSolutions, as of October 31, due to chip shortages, the global auto market has reduced production by 9.803 million vehicles this year, of which the Chinese auto market has reduced production by 1.863 million vehicles, accounting for 19% of the total reduction. AFS predicts that the global auto market will reduce production by 10.983 million vehicles this year.

Regarding the plan of car companies to deliver first and then install, Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Car Market Information Joint Conference, said that many car companies are currently launching some "reduced configuration" models to reduce their dependence on chips, which reflects their flexible attitude to respond to market changes. Ensuring the delivery of vehicles first will not only allow consumers to get the car as soon as possible, but will also be beneficial to the production and sales order of car companies, and can ensure that car companies operate more smoothly.
