According to foreign media reports, automotive lighting and electronics expert Hella has further developed its innovative chip-based headlight matrix system "Solid State Lighting | High Definition" (SSL | HD). The company said it has received mass production orders from well-known OEMs.

According to Hella, the headlamp technology will soon be used in a pure electric (SUV) of an international automaker and a premium car of a German automaker. The vehicles are expected to go into series production in mid-2024. The total order volume is up to 200 million euros over the contract period. Hella will develop and produce its headlamps worldwide, including in Germany, the Czech Republic and China.
For the first time, HELLA is using an asymmetrically arranged chip-based high-resolution SUV headlamp, where the SSL|HD module is only integrated on one side of the headlamp. The module also enables simple changeover from left- to right-hand traffic and vice versa. Its digital pixel switching also enables further personalization options, such as coming home and leaving home animations and other communication functions. For example, symbols that interact with the driver can be projected onto the road. To ensure that the road is optimally illuminated, the SSL|HD function is supplemented by other components such as BiLED and matrix modules.
Hella's SSL|HD technology is a further development of the LED matrix system. Hella said that the system can achieve ultra-high light output in the smallest light module size and can be used for a large number of functions. The SSL Micro-LED cluster consists of electronic components that can arrange 100 to 25,000 LED pixels in a very small space. These LED light groups are combined as light sources in headlights, and new applications can be realized due to the higher number of pixels. For example, they can partially block the illumination of oncoming vehicles and traffic signs. If the angle is correct, projection at a safe distance can also be achieved, or pedestrians or cyclists can be highlighted by light.
