Renesas R-Car SoC and RH850 MCU Enabled in New Nissan Skyline Model Equipped with ProPILOT 2.0 Driver Assistance System
TOKYO, Japan, August 7, 2019 – Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced that Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has adopted Renesas’ innovative, high-performance automotive electronics technology for its ProPILOT 2.0 intelligent navigation system, which was unveiled on the all-new Nissan Skyline on July 16, 2019. The driver assistance system combines a navigation system with fully automated driving on a single lane on a highway, and uses the Renesas R-Car automotive system-on-chip (SoC) and RH850 automotive microcontroller (MCU) to implement driving judgment and control in the electronic control unit (ECU).
ProPILOT 2.0 intelligent navigation technology is used for highway driving, covering the process from ramp entry to ramp exit. By working with the vehicle's navigation system, it helps the vehicle drive along the preset route on the designated road. This technology realizes the first non-human intervention driving in single-lane cruising state.
To achieve this advanced function, the Renesas R-Car SoC combines information about nearby vehicles and other objects collected by the camera and front radar with preloaded high-precision 3D map data for navigation to create a detailed map of the environment around the vehicle. The SoC determines the vehicle's position based on the map data and lane information, and makes a vehicle driving plan based on the information. The RH850 MCU receives the resulting data and sends control commands such as steering, accelerator, and brake to the ECU. The high-performance processing of the R-Car SoC combined with the real-time responsiveness and high reliability of the RH850 enables judgment and control operations to be performed sequentially and accurately, helping to realize Nissan's ProPILOT 2.0 driver assistance system.
“Introducing ProPILOT 2.0 on the Skyline required technical innovations to achieve multiple times higher real-time sensor data processing performance than before, while maintaining high reliability,” said Takashi Yoshizawa, Executive Vice President, Electronic Technology/System Technology Development Division, Nissan Motor. “Years of collaboration with leading companies such as Renesas have helped Nissan advance advanced driver assistance technologies, and we are pleased that the industry-leading ProPILOT 2.0 system is an outstanding result of this technology.”
“We are honored that Nissan has selected Renesas automotive semiconductors for the ProPILOT 2.0 system for its new Skyline model,” said Shingo Yamamoto, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Automotive Solutions Business Unit at Renesas Electronics Corporation. “Nissan’s confidence in the processing performance and quality of our semiconductors, as well as their confidence in Renesas as a total project partner for the ADAS ECU, enabled us to integrate Renesas’ technical expertise for development. Looking ahead, we believe that the partnership between Renesas and Nissan will continue to deepen and strengthen.”
Renesas will continue to introduce innovative solutions to promote the development of driver assistance systems and autonomous driving technologies, realizing reliable and safe travel.
