Tokyo, Japan, Adelaide, Australia, October 7, 2016 – Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Cohda Wireless, a leading provider of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and connected autonomous vehicles (CAV), today announced their collaboration in the areas of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. By combining Renesas’ V2X R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) and Cohda Wireless’ V2X and CAV software solutions, the two companies are delivering a reference solution that supports the communication standards for V2X system development in Europe and North America.
The new jointly developed V2X reference design will be demonstrated at the ITS World Congress 2016.
Cohda Wireless will demonstrate the jointly developed V2X reference solution combining Renesas’ R-Car W2R and R-Car W2H SoCs with Cohda Wireless’ software at ITS World Congress 2016, taking place October 10-14 in Melbourne, Australia, at booth 313.
In response to the U.S. Department of Transportation's mandate for V2X to improve road safety and efficiency, and the recent deployment of V2X technology in Japan, a goal has been set to promote safe V2X technology in various regions around the world. Through more than a decade of research and development on the IEEE 802.11p protocol, WLAN-based technology has been proven to provide reliable and secure communications for "Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems" (C-ITS). Critical and time-sensitive information about all road users and road environments, such as traffic control devices, will be shared to improve safety and efficiency. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, V2X technology will reduce non-injury collisions by more than 80%.
Renesas has established an ecosystem with Cohda Wireless to provide reference solutions that help accelerate the development of V2X systems. The new V2X reference solution complies with European and North American standards set by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and IEEE.
“Renesas is committed to providing the automotive industry with greater safety and comfort through easy-to-use solutions (ADAS) and V2X systems that can be brought to market faster,” said Jean-Francois Chouteau, Senior Director of the Automotive Safety and ADAS Solutions Business Unit at Renesas. “Cohda Wireless’ software is a key element of our V2X solution, which can greatly improve driving safety and make V2X systems a mainstream driving system and realize autonomous driving.”
“As a market leader in software solutions for connected autonomous vehicles and V2X, Cohda Wireless is pleased to support Renesas’ R-Car W2R and R-Car W2H SoCs,” said Paul Gray, CEO of Cohda Wireless. “Renesas’ V2X SoCs combined with Cohda’s software solutions address the emerging needs of autonomous driving.”
Renesas V2X Starter Kit
Renesas' V2X starter kit for V2X reference solution includes R-Car W2R, 5.9GHz band automotive wireless communication WAVE SoC, and V2X host processor R-Car W2H SoC with embedded hardware security module, which can encrypt communication/information and protect against cyber attacks. The R-Car-based starter kit complies with the IEEE 802.11p standard for ITS used in Europe and North America, as well as other applicable standards (including those for security requirements). The starter kit also meets and exceeds the SAE minimum performance requirements set by the Connected Vehicle Pilot funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which is recognized as committed to promoting the construction of V2X infrastructure. Due to the use of Renesas' unique radio frequency (RF) system design technology, R-Car W2R can achieve industry-leading performance, such as suppressing out-of-band transmission signal noise to less than 65 dBm specified by ETSI. R-Car W2H V2X host processor SoC can integrate Japanese, American and European security methods, communication protocols and applications. The V2X starter kit meets automotive environmental, quality, and reliability requirements, and is optimized for optimal performance using the experience and technology accumulated over many years by Renesas, a supplier of advanced automotive semiconductors.
Cohda's Software Solutions
Cohada Wireless' software solutions include network, infrastructure, applications, management and security layers for IEEE 1609 and ETSI ITS-TC stacks.
System manufacturers can now select the attractive Renesas-Cohda Wireless V2X reference solution and leverage mature hardware and software technologies, both of which have been thoroughly tested and proven to operate reliably.
Availability
The Renesas-Cohda Wireless V2X reference solution is scheduled to be available in April 2017.
