  Microchip Technology Inc. (Microchip Technology) announced at the Embedded World Conference in Germany that it has launched a new low-pin-count 32-bit PIC32 microcontroller (MCU) series, providing 61 DMIPS performance in packages as small as 5mm x 5mm, suitable for space-constrained and cost-sensitive designs. The PIC32 "MX1" and "MX2" MCUs are the smallest and lowest-cost PIC32 microcontrollers, and are also the first PIC32 MCUs with dedicated audio and capacitive sensing peripherals. The latest devices are also equipped with USB On-the-Go (OTG) capabilities, making them ideal for developing audio accessories and other applications in the consumer, industrial, medical and automotive markets.

  The PIC32 MX1 and MX2 MCUs are rated for operation up to 105°C and feature up to 128 KB of flash and 32 KB of RAM, two I2S audio processing interfaces, an integrated hardware peripheral for adding mTouch™ capacitive touch buttons or advanced sensors, and an 8-bit parallel master port (PMP) for graphic display or connecting external memory. In addition, the new devices feature a 13-channel, 1 Msps on-chip 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and serial communication peripherals; the PIC32 MX2 MCU also adds USB OTG functionality. These MCUs are available in 28- to 44-pin packages as small as 5mm x 5mm with a pin pitch of 0.5mm. Microchip's peripheral pin selection feature further simplifies design work by allowing developers to "remap" most of the digital function pins in the chip, making it easier to modify layout and design. The PIC32 MX1 and MX2 devices are compatible with Microchip’s 16-bit PIC24F product line for easy migration and are supported by MPLAB® X IDE, the unified development environment for all Microchip 8-, 16- and 32-bit MCUs.

  Development tool support

  To start developing with the new MCUs, designers can use Microchip's MPLAB Starter Kit for PIC32MX1XX/2XX MCUs (part number DM320013). This USB-powered kit features a PIC32 MX250F128D MCU with 128 KB flash and 32 KB RAM, as well as a 2-inch color TFT display (220×176 pixels), capacitive touch sliders and buttons, SD card storage, and 24-bit audio playback. In addition, the Microstick II (part number DM330013-2) tool and the PIC32 MX250F128D plug-in module for the Explorer 16 development board (part number MA320011) are available.

The new devices also feature a 13-channel, 1 Msps on-chip 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), as well as USB 2.0 and serial communication peripherals. These MCUs offer eight new packages for the PIC32 MCU line, with pin counts ranging from 28 to 44, and a minimum size of 5 mm × 5 mm and 0.5 mm pitch. Microchip's peripheral pin select feature further reduces design difficulty, allowing developers to "remap" most of the digital function pins on the chip, making wiring and design modifications simpler. The PIC32 MX1 and MX2 devices are compatible with Microchip’s 16-bit PIC24F product line for easy migration and are supported by MPLAB® X IDE, a single development environment for all Microchip 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit MCUs.

  “More designs in consumer, industrial, medical and other markets require high-quality audio, touch sensing and graphics capabilities, as well as USB communications,” said Sumit Mitra, vice president of Microchip’s High-Performance Microcontroller Division. “With so many on-chip peripherals and features in a small package, the PIC32 MX1 and MX2 enable designers to add all of these capabilities while making their designs smaller and more cost-effective.”

  Development tool support

  In addition, Microchip has launched the MPLAB Starter Kit for PIC32MX1XX/2XX MCUs (Part Number: DM320013). The USB-powered kit is equipped with a PIC32MX220F032 with 32 KB flash and 8 KB RAM, as well as a 2-inch color TFT display (220 × 176 pixels), capacitive touch sliders and buttons, SD card storage and 24-bit audio playback. Microchip also launched a new PIC32MX CTMU evaluation board (Part Number: AC323027), and a new PIC32MX220F032D plug-in module for the Explorer 16 development board (Part Number: MA320011).

  Microchip's PIC32 32-bit MCU is a high-performance 80 MHz 32-bit flash microcontroller based on MIPS. It has a MIPS32® M4K™ 32-bit core with a 5-stage pipeline, an operating voltage range of 2.3V to 3.6V, and provides a variety of general and dedicated peripherals, including Ethernet, CAN, USB host/device/OTG, flash memory 32KB to 512KB, and onboard RAM from 8KB to 128KB.
