The ATmega168 can operate the Timer Counter 2 from an external 32.768 kHz table oscillator or an external clock source. The timer/counter pins TOSC1/TOSC2 and XTAL1/XTAL2 are shared. This means that the timer counter oscillator can only be used when the internal calibrated RC oscillator is used as the system clock source. See Figure 13 for the crystal oscillator connection diagram.
If EXTCLK in the ASSR register is written to logic "1", an external clock source can be used for TOSC1. To use an external clock instead of a 32 kHz crystal, refer to P139 "Asynchronous Operation of Timer Counters".
