For timing insensitive applications, the external RC oscillator shown in Figure 12 can be used. The frequency can be roughly estimated using the equation f = 1/(3RC). The capacitor C must be at least 22 pF. By programming the fuse bit CKOPT, the user can enable the on-chip 36 pF capacitor between XTAL1 and GND, eliminating the need for an external capacitor.
The oscillator can operate in four different modes, each with its own optimized frequency range. The operating mode is selected by the fuse bits CKSEL3..0, as shown in Table 7.
After selecting this oscillator, the start-up time is determined by the fuse bits SUT as shown in Table 8.
Note: 1. These options can only be used when the operating frequency is not too close to the maximum frequency.
