According to foreign media reports on March 20, Huawei is actively developing a cutting-edge "magnetoelectric" storage technology, which is expected to completely change the landscape of the data storage industry.

It is reported that this new "magnetoelectric disk" (MED) technology not only far exceeds existing SSD and other storage devices in speed, but also achieves unprecedented breakthroughs in energy efficiency and capacity.

In terms of energy consumption, the new "magnetoelectric" storage consumes only 71W per PB, saving up to 90% compared to traditional magnetic hard disk drives (HDD). This undoubtedly saves data centers and large enterprises a lot of energy costs.

In terms of performance, Huawei expects MED performance per rack to reach an astonishing 8GB/s, which is 2.5 times faster than the highest performance of archival tape devices. This will greatly increase the speed of data migration in data centers, making them more efficient when processing large-scale data.

In addition, new "magnetoelectric" storage technology has also achieved a breakthrough in capacity. The first generation of MED devices is expected to provide approximately 24TB of capacity per "disk," allowing a rack system to accumulate more than 10PB of data.

What is surprising is that while providing such a huge capacity, the system consumes only 2 kilowatts of power. The solution will be launched in 2025.
