Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on the 23rd that the chip shortage problem is expected to continue until 2024.

He also warned that the semiconductor shortage has also caused a shortage of advanced chip manufacturing equipment, which may hinder global chip production capacity expansion plans.

He said that the delivery time of chip manufacturing equipment for the new chip factories (called wafer fabs) the company plans to build in the United States and Europe has been significantly extended. He believes that the number one problem in expanding production capacity is the supply of chip manufacturing equipment.

Intel has announced plans to invest tens of billions of dollars in new chip manufacturing facilities in Europe, including a large new plant in Germany and an expansion in Ireland. In January, they also announced plans to build a $20 billion plant in Ohio.

He added that he was urging authorities in the United States and Europe to speed up legislation, with both countries introducing their own chip bills to boost national semiconductor manufacturing.

Regarding the current severe global chip shortage problem, Gelsinger also said bluntly: "It is unlikely to end before 2024." But he also pointed out: "If the government supports us, we will invest." The chip crisis can be overcome in about two years. He called for political stability and production incentive policies: "We hope to diversify and support material production in the United States and Europe.
