When the battery is fast charged, an inappropriate charge termination method may lead to a shortened battery life. At present, environmentally friendly NiMH batteries will gradually replace NiCd batteries, so there is a need for battery chargers that are compatible with NiCd and NiMH batteries. In this case, the common charge monitoring method applicable to NiCd batteries is no longer suitable for NiMH batteries. The termination method of battery charging is based on detecting the inflection point of the battery voltage curve. The detection of this inflection point not only makes NiMH battery and NiCd battery chargers compatible, but also prolongs the service life of NiCd batteries. Chargers with compatible performance can be controlled by 8-bit microcontrollers (MCU, such as ST's ST6210).
ST6210 can achieve the purpose of safe charging by combining three charging termination methods. The battery charger circuit composed of ST6210 is shown in the figure below.
