When the battery is fast charged, inappropriate charging termination method may lead to shortened battery life. At present, environmentally friendly nickel-metal hydride batteries will gradually replace nickel-cadmium batteries, so there is a need for battery chargers that are compatible with nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. In this case, the common charge monitoring methods that are suitable for nickel-cadmium batteries are no longer suitable for nickel-metal hydride batteries. The battery charging termination method is based on detecting the inflection point of the battery voltage curve. The detection of this inflection point not only makes the nickel-metal hydride battery and the nickel-cadmium battery charger compatible, but also extends the service life of the nickel-cadmium battery. Chargers with compatible performance can be controlled by an 8-bit microcontroller (MCU, such as ST's ST6210). ST6210 can achieve safe charging by combining three charging termination methods.
