  This article briefly describes the advantages of adding peripherals to power management ICs. In general, adding peripherals to power management ICs can improve the integration of hardware and software.

  Product Features:

  * Optimally mix switch-mode regulators and LDO regulators

  * Real-time clock

  *  Crystal oscillator

  * Compatible with I2C control interface

  Scope of application:

  * Mobile or portable devices

  * Telemedicine equipment

  * Security system, etc.

  Freescale  's dedicated power management ICs (PMICs) for i.MX applications processors enable developers to optimize hardware/software integration by combining the required voltage regulators into one device and providing additional features such as charge meters, touchscreen interfaces, USB transceivers or audio capabilities.

  PMICs integrate switching and linear regulators and typically support programming of regulator output voltages as well as power-up sequencing and timing. Other features may include support for dynamic voltage scaling, which helps extend battery life in portable applications, and support for charging the battery through a wall outlet and/or USB port. PMICs are supported as part of the entire i.MX ecosystem, which includes reference design platforms and customer support services to help reduce time to market.

  Among the available PMICs, the MC13783 is optimized for use with either the i.MX31 or i.MX27 processors, and it also integrates audio and user interface functions such as handset speaker drivers, class AB amplifiers, voice codecs, touchscreen interfaces, and RGB LED drivers.

  The MC13892 for i.MX35 or i.MX51 processors adds a backlight driver and RGBLED driver as well as a battery charger and a 10-bit ADC for monitoring the battery or general use.

  The MC34704 is designed specifically for multimedia processors such as the i.MX25 and integrates up to eight buck/boost regulators with features such as soft-start control, startup sequencing and comprehensive fault detection and protection capabilities.

  The MC34708 and MC34709 target applications using the i.MX50 or i.MX53 and offer designers the choice of an integrated Li-Ion battery charger or a charger-less PMIC.
