The u-blox UBX-R5 LTE-M/NB-IoT chipset is the first to achieve a high degree of integration of end-to-end security mechanisms and wireless technologies, fully meeting the needs of mission-critical or long-lifecycle IoT applications.

On April 3, 2020, u-blox (SIX:UBXN), a global provider of leading positioning and wireless communication technologies, announced that its proprietary multi-band LTE-M/NB-IoT chipset UBX-R5 has been successfully certified by the Global Certification Forum (GCF). With its excellent end-to-end device security, data security and access control management functions, the chipset has become the first IoT chipset certified by the GCF IoT chipset program. The GCF program was launched in January this year to certify IoT chipsets covering NB-IoT and LTE-M, so that the entire IoT ecosystem can easily integrate and embed certified chipsets into modules and devices.

Lars Nielsen, CEO of the Global Certification Forum, said: “GCF’s IoT chipset certification program was launched earlier this year and we are very pleased that u-blox’s UBX-R5 Cat-M1 chipset has been certified in such a short time . We expect to see many more IoT chipsets certified this year, which will provide confidence and reliability to the IoT industry by ensuring that they meet industry-recognized 3GPP standards.”

Andreas Thiel, Head of Product Center at u-blox, said: “We are delighted that the GCF has recognized the quality of our UBX-R5 LTE-M/NB-IoT IoT chipset, which not only sets a new benchmark for IoT connectivity, but also lays the foundation for secure chip-to-cloud communications.”

u-blox UBX-R5 is a 5G-enabled cellular chipset for mission-critical or long-lifecycle IoT applications in low-power wide-area (LPWA), including smart metering, connected cars, tracking management, security systems, building automation, smart lighting solutions, and connected healthcare. Mobile network operators are announcing the launch of 5G networks, so 5G compatibility has become a key factor in selecting cellular communication modules. LTE-M and NB-IoT are backward compatible with 5G networks. By implementing key LTE-M and NB-IoT features in 3GPP Release 14, UBX-R5 can perform software upgrades on deployed devices, allowing users to transition to the 5G era more smoothly.

Additionally, with a hardware-based Root of Trust (RoT) integrated into a discrete secure element (compliant with EAL5+ High Common Criteria certification requirements), the UBX-R5 offers unrivalled built-in end-to-end security, making it ideal for protecting sensitive assets and communications.
