MediaTek terminates acquisition, Intel suddenly decides not to sell one of its chip businesses: reasons unknown
MediaTek recently announced that the $85 million deal to acquire Intel's power chips announced in November last year has fallen through. The two parties mutually agreed to terminate the transaction, but did not give a reason.
MediaTek emphasized that the above-mentioned changes will not have a significant impact on the company, nor will they affect other current business cooperation between the two parties.
In November 2020, MediaTek announced that it plans to spend US$85 million to buy Intel's Enpirion power management chip product line.
MediaTek pointed out at the time that after the completion of this acquisition, it will expand the company's product line to provide integrated high-frequency and high-efficiency power solutions for use in FPGA, SoC, CPU, and ASIC, targeting enterprise-level system applications, which will help expand the scale of operations and improve operating performance and competitiveness.
MediaTek made the announcement on behalf of its subsidiary LiQi, and the Enpirion division was also purchased by Intel and belongs to Intel's FPGA division.
Intel entered the power chip business only after it announced the acquisition of FPGA manufacturer Altera for US$16.7 billion in 2015, but it is obvious that this part is not Intel's focus, so it is normal to sell it.
According to public information, the Intel Enpirion Power System-on-Chip (PowerSoC) module is a DC-DC step-down converter that integrates almost all the components needed to build a power supply without affecting performance or efficiency. It can meet the stringent power requirements of FPGAs, ASICs, processors and other semiconductors.
