Will facial recognition become the mainstream identity verification for college entrance examinations?
Text | Dejiang
On June 7, the highly anticipated national college entrance examination officially began.
According to information released by the Ministry of Education, the number of applicants for the national college entrance examination in 2019 reached 10.31 million. This is the second time that the number of applicants has exceeded 10 million, following the 10.2 million applicants in 2009.
The increase in the number of candidates has also brought certain pressures to the management and security of the college entrance examination. Preparation for the exam, test paper security, anti-cheating, etc. have always been the focus of people's attention. In recent years, the use of technologies such as AI to ensure the security of the college entrance examination and prevent cheating has become a new trend.
AI exam preparation and application filling
As the college entrance examination approaches, many candidates begin to practice tests to fill in their gaps. After finishing all the subjects of the college entrance examination, many candidates and their parents will try to estimate the scores in preparation for filling out their college entrance examination applications.
According to Leifeng.com, Baidu officially launched the 2019 version of the College Entrance Examination Information Service Platform on June 3. As long as users search for the word "College Entrance Examination" on the Baidu APP, they will find the "College Entrance Examination Cheer" smart applet on the homepage.
According to Baidu, this smart mini-program relies on AI, through big data analysis, OCR recognition, intelligent retrieval and other technologies, and aggregates Baidu products such as Baidu Knows, Wenku, Encyclopedia, Tieba, etc. to help candidates and parents prepare for exams, estimate scores and prepare to fill out their applications. As data accumulates, Baidu AI's analysis of candidates' needs will become more and more accurate.
Preparation service: In addition to various emergency guides for the college entrance examination, the smart applet also provides real questions and analysis of the college entrance examinations in various places over the years, test papers, and simulation papers for students to practice. Volunteer application service: Based on massive data, the smart applet's big data map of colleges and universities covers more than 2,500 colleges and universities for unified enrollment, including the school's basic information, strengths and characteristics, and application scores over the years. It also covers the 1,310 standard majors announced by the Ministry of Education, involving the ranking, characteristics, and employment status of the majors, and other issues of common concern to candidates and parents.
Facial recognition to prevent fraud
As the college entrance examination is of great importance, the registration and security check process often takes a long time, and efficient verification of candidate information has become a need of the education authorities. Facial recognition has long been widely used in the security field, and now this technology is also used to ensure the safety of the college entrance examination.
Using facial recognition technology to verify the information of candidates is more efficient than using ID cards and fingerprints in the past. Fingerprint recognition is not as accurate and efficient as facial recognition, because fingerprints need to be collected on site, and taking the exam on behalf of others through fingerprint membranes is also a loophole. Facial recognition collects candidates' photos online and connects to the Ministry of Public Security database for automatic comparison. It only takes 1-2 seconds to identify a candidate. Therefore, many places have begun to apply facial recognition to the security of the college entrance examination.
According to Gusu Evening News, this year's college entrance examination, all candidates in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province will take the exam in the newly upgraded standardized examination room. In addition to undergoing routine inspections upon entering the venue, candidates will also have to undergo identity recognition and facial recognition. The specific steps are to swipe the ID card first, then undergo facial recognition verification, and they can take their seats after passing.
This year, Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province, used facial recognition to verify the identity of candidates throughout the city. The invigilator stood at the entrance of the examination room, holding a facial recognition terminal to verify the face of each candidate. According to China News Service, more than 99% of candidates can pass the face scan in one go, and the recognition time is 1-2 seconds. If the automatic review fails, the invigilator will start a manual review and mark it, which can be checked later.
In addition to verifying the identity of students to prevent cheating, it is equally important to keep the college entrance examination papers confidential. Haidian District in Beijing used an intelligent examination paper confidentiality room for this year's college entrance examination. The confidentiality room uses a facial recognition system to verify the identity information of every person entering. From entering the confidentiality building to the examination room, and then to leaving the confidentiality building after taking the examination papers, the entire process is recorded.
Leifeng.com Summary
In recent years, AI has moved from the laboratory to the public and has begun to play an important role in various fields. However, professional AI talents are still scarce, so many universities at home and abroad have opened artificial intelligence majors to meet the market demand for talents.
The facial recognition verification technology in the college entrance examination examination room is the best popular science. Through the college entrance examination as an amplifier, candidates, parents and teachers will further realize the value of AI technology, and may even encourage candidates to actively apply for artificial intelligence majors. Then, the nearly 10 million college entrance examination candidates every year will be a huge talent pool waiting to be tapped.
