GITHUB suffers the largest DDOS attack in history

According to Leifeng.com, at 12:15 pm Eastern Time on Wednesday, GitHub suffered the largest DDoS attack in history, with 1.35TB of traffic per second instantly impacting the developer platform.

GitHub tried to fight back, but within 10 minutes, it automatically asked security company Akamai Prolexic for help. Prolexic took over all of GitHub's information flow as an intermediary and sent data through its cleaning center to remove and block malicious packets. After 8 minutes, the attacker stopped the attack.

Josh Shau, vice president of network security at Akamai, said they modeled it based on five times the largest attack the Internet has ever seen. "I'm sure we can handle 1.3 Tbps, but at the same time we've never seen anything this big."

Wednesday's onslaught wasn't the first major DDoS attack against GitHub, with the platform facing a six-day onslaught in March 2015.
