Vishay WSBS8518…40 Power Metal Strip® Battery Shunts Enable Higher Accuracy and Consistent Contact Position

Recently, Vishay released a new 36W Power Metal Strip® battery shunt with 3 sensing pins in the 8518 form factor. The Vishay Dale WSBS8518...40 has an extremely low resistance of 50µΩ. Compared with the Hall effect current sensing method, this resistor has higher accuracy and lower cost. Its sensing pin plays an auxiliary role in the PCB installation process, keeping the contact position consistent, and can be connected to ground through the third sensing pin.
The three-sensing pin resistors released this time use a unique processing technology to achieve extremely low resistance values of 50µΩ, 100µΩ and 125µΩ. The low resistance value enables the resistor to measure more accurate data to determine whether the battery is charged and discharged, thereby helping designers meet specific customer battery management needs in gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles and trucks, as well as electric forklifts, UPS systems and other heavy-duty industrial applications.
WSBS8518...40 uses a solid metal manganese copper alloy resistor core with low TCR (±20ppm/℃). The connector and the resistor core are connected by welding, so that the continuous current can reach 828A (depending on the specific resistance value). The inductance of the resistor is less than 5nH, the thermal EMF is less than 1µV/℃, and the operating temperature range is -65℃~+170℃. The device complies with RoHS and Vishay green standards and is halogen-free.
