Regarding IGBT/MOSFET pre-drivers, I believe that engineers who work on motor drives or high-power device drivers will have some understanding. The so-called pre-driver actually isolates the microcontroller from the IGBT/MOSFET, provides protection for the load and driver, and provides diagnostic information for the microcontroller (MCU). This type of pre-driver is generally built using op amps, MOS or transistors. On the premise of protecting the driver and microcontroller, it also compares the drain-source voltage (VDS) of the MOSFET with the reference voltage to achieve status diagnosis; then do you know that optocouplers can actually be used as pre-drivers for IGBT/MOSFET? Toshiba has been deeply involved in IGBT/MOSFET products and optocoupler application technology for many years. This pre-driver for medium and high current IGBT/MOSFET, TLP5231, is a supplement and improvement to Toshiba's semiconductor series product line.
TLP5231 consists of two infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and two high-gain high-speed optical receiving IC chips, thereby realizing the feedback function of the fault signal. It adopts SO16L package and has an output peak current of up to ±2.5A .
The TLP5231 is able to use an external complementary MOSFET buffer, consuming current only when the gate of the buffer MOSFET is charging or discharging, helping to reduce power consumption .
TLP5231 can provide effective common-mode transient suppression of ±25kV/µs, thereby improving EMI in the circuit. It also has an isolation voltage of 5kv, a wide operating temperature range of -40℃ to 110℃, and excellent anti-interference ability , which can cope with different working scenarios.
The specific parameters are as follows:
(Unless otherwise specified, Ta = -40°C to 110°C)
1. Simplify dead time design
The TLP5231 has built-in active timing controlled dual outputs, which eliminates the need for dead time design and prevents switching losses caused by simultaneous conduction. It is suitable for driving P-channel and N-channel complementary MOSFET buffers.
2. Improve soft shutdown design flexibility
When overcurrent is detected, since this soft-turn-off MOSFET does not use the same wire (line) as the MOSFET Q2 buffer, a configurable gate soft turn-off time is achieved by using another external N-channel MOSFET, thereby improving design flexibility without affecting the normal shutdown operation.
3. Automatic reset of fault signal
When the collector voltage is monitored and an overcurrent or undervoltage lockout is detected, a fault signal is output to the primary side. Therefore, compared with traditional IGBT/MOSFET, it supports the design as a pre-driver.
The TLP5231 optocoupler is mainly used for isolated gate drive circuits of medium and high current IGBTs and MOSFETs. Its main application scenarios can be industrial equipment (industrial inverters and photovoltaic inverter power conditioners, etc.) or uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
Toshiba has spent ten years honing its skills in pre-drivers for IGBTs and MOSFETs, and has done a lot of work in miniaturizing pre-drivers and simplifying circuits. Through its continuous accumulation of experience and summary of customer needs, it is believed that Toshiba's pre-driver product selection and reference will be extremely valuable in future products using pre-drivers.
