Toshiba Launches New Gate Driver IC for 3-Phase Brushless DC Motors in Various Automotive Applications
Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) today announced that it has begun shipping engineering samples of the “TB9084FTG,” a gate driver [1] IC for 3-phase brushless DC motors . The device can be used to drive key in-vehicle functions including body system applications [2] , electric pumps, and motor generators [3] . Samples of the device are now available for application.
Many mechanical devices on today’s road vehicles are now electrified, and a large number of onboard electric motors are installed on vehicles, including those used in body system applications. This shift is driving the industry to replace brushed DC motors with brushless DC motors, which are quieter and more durable.
The TB9084FTG is designed to enhance the transition from brushed DC motors to brushless DC motors. The device provides the minimum gate drive IC functions required for automotive applications and supports a wide range of automotive motor applications by combining external components such as MOSFETs, power ICs, microcontrollers, and communication PHY [4] . Any changes in customer system requirements can be achieved by replacing the corresponding external components, significantly improving the flexibility of system design.
The new product’s minimal functionality allows it to be housed in one of the industry’s smallest [5] packages (6 mm × 6 mm P-VQFN36-0606-0.50), contributing to device miniaturization. The package also features solderable flanks [6] , making it easier to visually inspect and confirm solder joint reliability.
Toshiba will continue to expand its gate driver IC lineup by evaluating market needs and optimizing product functions, and launch new products that will contribute to expanding the electrification of in-vehicle equipment and improving its safety.
