New product express
Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global semiconductor solutions provider, announced that it is the first in the industry to launch a general-purpose 32-bit RISC-V microcontroller (MCU) built on an in-house self-developed CPU core - R9A02G021. While several MCU vendors have recently joined investment alliances to advance RISC-V product development, Renesas has independently designed and tested a new RISC-V core that is now available in commercial products and Available for sale worldwide. The new R9A02G021 MCU product group provides a clear path for embedded system designers to develop a variety of power-sensitive and cost-sensitive applications based on the open source instruction set architecture (ISA).

While most of today's RISC-V solutions are application-specific, the R9A02G021 product group MCUs are designed for multiple end markets, including the Internet of Things, consumer electronics, medical equipment, small appliances, and industrial systems. Similar to existing general-purpose MCUs, designers can take advantage of the comprehensive development environment built by Renesas and its extensive tool chain partner network for the R9A02G021, allowing them to significantly reduce costs, save engineering resources, and shorten development time.
Daryl Khoo, Vice President of Embedded Processing 1st Business Division at Renesas said:
"From our RISC-V-specific ASSP to this new general-purpose MCU, our goal is to provide customers with a commercially viable product that can quickly enter volume production while demonstrating the benefits of the RISC-V architecture. In addition, customers often Faced with complex design challenges and trade-offs, such as performance, power consumption, memory or CPU architecture trade-offs, the new RISC-V MCU brings more choices to customers who want to adopt an open architecture.”
As an early adopter of RISC-V, Renesas has a rich portfolio of RISC-V application-specific products, including 32-bit voice control and motor control ASSP products , as well as the RZ/Five 64-bit general-purpose microprocessor based on the Andes Technology CPU core ( MPU) . The R9A02G021 product group, as the first-generation general-purpose MCU based on Renesas’ self-developed RISC-V core, will be launched in the next few years.

Tom Hackenberg, principal analyst for semiconductors, memory and computing at Yole Group, said:
"So far, MCUs have lacked strong commercial designs from leading vendors, a key addressable market for RISC-V, which accounts for around 85% of the MCU market. As Renesas introduces RISC-V to its diverse MCU portfolio With full commercial availability of multi-market MCUs, and much-needed support from recognized industry-standard tool vendors, the RISC-V market is expected to finally begin to accelerate. As other leading vendors follow Renesas' lead, RISC-V should be close to capable by the end of 2029. 10% of the entire MCU market even exceeds the huge growth potential.”
Balancing performance and power consumption
The R9A02G021 RISC-V product group achieves excellent performance with clock speeds up to 48MHz and extremely low standby power consumption of only 0.3µA. 128KB fast flash memory, 16KB SRAM memory, and 4KB flash memory are available for data storage. This family of MCUs is designed to withstand harsh conditions and can operate reliably in ambient temperatures from -40°C to 125°C. The product also features a standard serial communication interface and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) functions to facilitate high-speed, secure connections to sensors, displays and other external modules. The wide input voltage range of 1.6V to 5.5V enables low voltage, low current operation and noise immunity, making the R9A02G021 ideal for battery-powered devices.
