High reliability 1608 size white SMD LED
Rohm, a world-renowned semiconductor manufacturer (headquartered in Kyoto, Japan), has launched the 1608 size (1.6x0.8mm) white light chip LED "SMLD12WBN1W", which is suitable for display panels of industrial equipment such as thermostats and various small devices. It not only has a long life , but also has excellent mounting properties and high reliability .
In recent years , the use of small white LEDs as light sources for digital displays and indicator lights in display panels of industrial equipment and consumer electronic devices has continued to increase in order to improve design flexibility and visibility.
Especially in the industrial equipment market, there is a growing demand for LEDs that are highly reliable and will not experience light decay when powered on for more than 10 years. On the other hand, epoxy resin or silicone resin has been used in the injection molding of white light SMD LEDs in the past, and in applications that require high reliability, there are issues with light decay and injection molding strength during mounting.
ROHM previously had a 1608-size SMD LED product lineup from red to green, and accelerated the development of white light SMD LEDs to meet market demand. This time, by adopting a new resin that combines the excellent properties of epoxy resin and silicone resin, it successfully ensured high reliability in the 1608-size white light SMD LED field.
此次开发的贴片LED,注模用的封装树脂采用新材料,在通电试验中(25℃、IF=20mA、1,000小时通电),成功地保持了100%的亮度。以相同的光通量进行比较时,寿命比以往硅树脂产品延长达20倍左右。另外,在直接影响贴装性的注模强度方面,与硅树脂产品相比,注模强度改善了约25倍,可显著减少贴装不良问题。使用这款确保高可靠性的白光贴片LED,还可长期保持应用的设计灵活性。
This product has been mass-produced and supplied at a scale of 1 million units per month since October 2018 (sample price 90 yen/unit, excluding tax). The production base is ROHM-Wako Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia). In addition, this product has been sold on AMEYA360, Right IC, Digi-key, and Mouser online sales platforms since January 2019.
In the future, ROHM will continue to promote the development of high-reliability LEDs and continuously strengthen its product lineup with excellent ease of use.
In the power-on test (25°C, IF=20mA, 1,000 hours of power-on), 100% brightness was successfully maintained
In the past, red and green LEDs were used in display panels for industrial equipment, which were not prone to yellowing of resins due to light energy, and light decay was not a big problem. On the other hand, small injection-molded LEDs generally use epoxy resins with high injection hardness ※1) , and in the case of short-wavelength (λD: ~527nm) LEDs, including white light, there is the issue of yellowing of resins due to light energy.
The LED developed this time, by using a new resin, succeeded in maintaining 100% brightness during the power-on test (25°C, IF=20mA, 1,000 hours of power-on). For example, when compared under the same luminous flux conditions, the life span was extended by about 20 times.
Compared with silicone, the injection molding strength is improved by about 25 times
The light decay problem can be improved by using silicone resin used in LED lighting. However, the injection molding layer of silicone resin material is easy to peel off from the PCB board. In addition, small LEDs cannot take measures to enhance mounting properties such as adding a reflective layer, making damage to the injection molding part a problem.
By adopting the new resin, the mold strength, which directly affects mountability, has been improved by about 25 times compared to silicone resin products under high temperature conditions (Ta=150°C). This makes it less likely for defects to occur during mounting, thus achieving excellent mountability.
