SAN JOSE, Calif., August 20, 2019 – Power Integrations (Nasdaq: POWI), the leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, today announced the release of the CAPZero™-3 family of devices, the company’s latest generation of sophisticated and energy-efficient X-capacitor discharge ICs. The two-terminal CAPZero-3 ICs enable designers to easily meet the IEC60335 safety standard for large appliances, and the new ICs cover all capacitance values from 100 nF to 6 µF.
IEC60335 is a discharge safety standard covering all home appliances. To prevent electrical hazards to users, the standard requires that the voltage of the input X capacitor be discharged to less than 34 V within one second after AC power is disconnected. CAPZero-3 ICs block the current flowing through the X capacitor discharge resistors when the AC voltage is connected, and automatically discharge the X capacitors through these resistors after AC power is disconnected. CAPZero-3 ICs can simplify the design of EMI filtering circuits while allowing the use of larger X capacitors, thereby using smaller inductor components without changing power consumption.
The CAPZero-3 IC can be placed either before or after the system input fuse. The new device has high common-mode surge immunity, so no external ground connection is required, and has high differential-mode surge immunity due to the internal integrated 1000 V MOSFET. The creepage distance of the package and PCB is kept below 4 mm.
Edward Ong, product marketing manager at Power Integrations, said:
The CAPZero-3 device is certified to meet CB and Nemko safety requirements, eliminating the need for developers to perform separate safety testing of the power supply’s X-capacitor discharge circuit. The device is available now.
