2019 is the first year of 5G, and the commercial use of 5G will usher in explosive growth in related equipment and products, especially in the field of machine vision. Yan Kai, Industrial Marketing Manager of the Intelligent Sensing Division of ON Semiconductor Greater China, was interviewed by "Vision System Design" magazine on this topic, and explained the relevant construction of ON Semiconductor in the field of machine vision.

"Based on the rapid growth in 2018, the machine vision market achieved a relatively moderate growth in 2019. There is still a strong demand for machine vision in applications such as consumer electronics, LCD panels, power batteries, and solar energy," said Yan Kai, industrial marketing manager of the Intelligent Sensing Division of ON Semiconductor Greater China. "Of course, considering that each industry has its own cycle, the growth they show is not the same. For example, in 2019, the growth of consumer electronics applications slowed down due to the overall saturation of the smartphone market."
Under the strategy of upgrading China's intelligent manufacturing equipment, industrial manufacturing will maintain a growth trend. This also puts higher demands on machine vision. It is necessary to provide diversified products to meet the needs of different industries. For example, more resolution options to adapt to different application scenarios, higher frame rates to improve system efficiency, multi-spectral imaging, etc. Products will be upgraded to higher resolutions. Ten years ago, the resolution of typical industrial cameras was 300,000 to 2 million pixels, and now it has gradually upgraded to 5 million and 12 million pixels.

In addition to traditional manufacturing, ON Semiconductor is also very optimistic about the intelligent transportation and logistics industries. With the deepening of smart city construction, the demand for intelligent transportation systems is growing. Intelligent transportation systems play an important role in improving urban transportation efficiency and ensuring urban safety.
Logistics applications are another highlight. With the rapid growth of e-commerce, China's logistics industry is booming. More packages need to be processed more efficiently. Machine vision technology will be widely used in package sorting and unmanned warehousing, greatly improving logistics efficiency.
Of course, these applications will also put forward new requirements for machine vision technology itself.

Including higher resolution, higher bandwidth, and smarter algorithms. As machine vision technology becomes more popular, customers will become more diverse and require better products to meet their many needs.


2. Cost reduction
At present, most machine vision applications are concentrated in the mid-to-high-end manufacturing industry, which is related to the cost of machine vision systems. In the future, we need to provide more cost-effective products for more levels of customers.

3. Improving the usability of the system
To build a vision system that meets customer needs, professional skills in optics, electronics, and image algorithms are required, which is a big challenge for users. If the technical threshold of machine vision products can be lowered in the future, they will be further popularized.

Machine vision technology has decades of successful application experience in electronic product manufacturing. How to meet the needs of customers in the 5G era requires an accurate understanding of new production needs in order to match appropriate products and improve production efficiency.
In addition , the commercial use of 5G networks will bring revolutionary changes to machine vision. 5G provides a convenient and high-speed communication network. For machine vision systems, previously isolated data can be easily connected to the factory's central system through 5G to achieve real-time data interaction. At present, data is processed directly at the terminal, but in the future it may be processed more in the cloud. The cloud can deploy more powerful processors and run more complex algorithms to complete detection tasks that could not be processed in real time before, which will provide more possibilities for machine vision applications.

Artificial intelligence, 3D imaging and hyperspectral imaging will receive much attention. Artificial intelligence is gradually being implemented in machine vision inspection applications; the in-depth application of robots will drive 3D imaging into a high-speed development channel; the demand for features that can only be detected through specific bands will lead to rapid growth in the application of hyperspectral imaging, such as in industries related to resource recycling.
