Infineon Technologies launched a new solid-state isolator product series at the International Power Electronics Applications Exhibition (APEC) in the United States. The series enables faster, more reliable circuit switching and has protection capabilities not found in optical solid-state relays (SSRs). These isolators use coreless transformer technology to support 20 times higher energy transmission while also providing current and temperature protection for higher reliability and lower cost. Compared with the traditional solid-state isolator driving SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) and thyristor solutions currently used, the new solid-state isolator can drive Infineon's OptiMOS™ and CoolMOS™, and its power consumption is much lower. Up to 70%.

Infineon coreless transformer

Infineon's solid-state isolators enable solid-state relays to control loads above 1000 V and 100 A. Improved performance and reliability make coreless transformer technology suitable for advanced battery management, energy storage, renewable energy systems, and industrial and building automation system applications. With solid-state isolated drivers from Infineon, engineers can further increase the efficiency of electronic and electromechanical systems.

Davide Giacomini, Marketing Director of Infineon Technologies’ Zero Carbon Industrial Power Division, said: “The application of coreless transformers to solid-state isolators and relays has brought huge changes to power engineers; its RDS (on) is much better than existing light-controlled solutions. The solution is 50 times lower and can be used in higher voltage and power applications.”

When used with Infineon's CoolMOS™ S7 switches, these isolated drivers enable switch designs with significantly lower resistance than optically driven solid-state solutions. This can extend the life of the system design and reduce costs. Like all solid-state isolators, these semiconductor devices also offer better performance than electromagnetic relays, such as reducing power consumption by 40% and eliminating mechanical components for higher reliability.

The devices are compatible with Infineon's extensive switch portfolio, including CoolMOS™ S7, OptiMOS™ and linear FET combinations.
