According to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, thanks to the current environment, Taiwan's four major semiconductor manufacturers, including TSMC, UMC, MediaTek, and ASE Technology Holding, have seen a strong recovery in performance since June 2019, with revenue even increasing by 8% in November, outperforming the current global semiconductor industry.

The report stated that based on the monthly observation of the revenue changes of 19 technology companies in Taiwan, the total revenue in November fell by 2.4% compared with the same period in 2018, reaching NT$1.27 trillion, roughly the same as the amount in October. However, among these 19 technology companies, the revenue of four semiconductor companies including TSMC, UMC, MediaTek, and ASE Technology Holdings increased by 8.6% compared with the same period in 2018, significantly better than other IT companies, with revenue reaching NT$180.85 billion.

The report further analyzed that the performance recovery of these four large semiconductor manufacturers shows that both the United States and China have been actively hoping to successfully end the trade war in the past six months. Because the market supply of these manufacturers is ahead of demand, they continue to recover. For example, TSMC, the leading wafer foundry, has Apple, Huawei and Qualcomm as its customers, and its performance often becomes a barometer of market prosperity.

TSMC pointed out that since the end of 2018, after the US-China situation slowed down, TSMC's order demand has also started to pick up since July 2019. It is expected that the capital expenditure plan for 2019 will be increased from the original US$11 billion to US$15 billion. The performance is also reflected in the stock price. Since 2019, TSMC's stock price has risen by about 50%, surpassing the increase in the US Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Index. In November, TSMC's market value also surpassed its South Korean rival Samsung for the first time, becoming the most valuable company in Asia and the most valuable semiconductor company in the world.

However, the report also pointed out a hidden concern about the performance of the semiconductor industry, which is the imbalance between supply and demand in the market due to the shortage of CPUs from Intel, a major processor manufacturer. The report emphasized that ASUS, the sixth largest PC manufacturer in the world in terms of shipments, said that although ASUS's revenue in November was positive for the fifth consecutive month, it will continue to be optimistic in the future. However, due to the continued shortage of Intel's CPUs and the many uncertainties in the US-China trade war, the pressure brought by these interferences will continue until 2020.

Regarding Intel's CPU shortage, Intel stated that it is actively expanding its important 14nm production capacity and is also working hard to launch new products with 10nm process. Although it has not completely solved the current market problem, it has improved. However , Intel's CPU shortage has brought opportunities to its competitor AMD. Many personal computer companies have adopted AMD's solutions to meet market demand. However, AMD's market share has not increased rapidly because relevant manufacturers have to spend time redesigning and testing when adopting AMD solutions.

In summary, the shortage of Intel processors is indeed a hidden worry for the development of the semiconductor industry, because HP, the world's second largest PC manufacturer, has anticipated the revenue impact brought by the CPU shortage. In addition, Dell, the world's third largest PC manufacturer, has even lowered its 2019 shipments.
