With the rise of in-vehicle network connectivity technologies such as Bluetooth® and LTE/5G, vehicles today face more cybersecurity vulnerabilities than ever before, which has driven new cybersecurity regulations and specifications for the automotive market. Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) announced the launch of the CryptoAutomotive™ security IC - TrustAnchor100 (TA100) to help OEMs and their module suppliers simplify the upgrade process of existing designs to meet the security requirements of future automotive products. This cryptographic companion device supports in-vehicle cybersecurity solutions such as secure boot, firmware updates and message authentication, including controller area network (CAN) MAC at bus speed.

To comply with new safety regulations, automotive designers must rebuild the vehicle's electronic control units with secure hardware. Existing solutions on the market include single-chip dual-core hardware security module (HSM) devices, which require OEMs and their module suppliers to re-architect their respective application software for security integration. In addition to the time-consuming and labor-intensive integration, the security vulnerabilities caused by this separate re-architecting can also seriously hinder product development. Third-party security software can help overcome this obstacle, but it also increases development costs.
TA100 provides an alternative in-vehicle network architecture deployment for secure boot and message authentication. The TA100 solution fully meets the requirements of EVITA Medium and EVITA Full hardware security modules and has been recognized by multiple OEMs around the world. After carefully evaluating the cybersecurity specifications of several well-known OEMs, Microchip designed a variety of features of TA100 to help OEMs' first-tier suppliers comply with the production part approval process (PPAP). In addition, Microchip also provides security specification and quotation request (RFQ) evaluation services to help first-tier suppliers understand customer needs and increase the success rate of project bids. By providing pre-programmed internal application encryption code with a unique asymmetric key pair and related x.509 certificates, TA100 eliminates obstacles associated with security code development and configuration, reduces security risks and production costs, and speeds up market launch.
TA100 has passed intensive third-party vulnerability assessments and has been proven to have strong anti-attack capabilities. It has passed AEC-Q100 automotive level 1 certification, FIPS 140-2 CMVP security level 2 and physical key protection level 3 certification, and won the highest score in the Joint Interpretation Library (JIL) high-level vulnerability assessment. In addition, TA100 also provides software components such as AUTOSAR drivers, microcontroller abstraction layer (MCAL) and Microchip's CryptoAuthentication™ library, which can be seamlessly integrated into industrial standard operating systems, AUTOSAR, or customized software protocol stacks for implementing encryption functions.
“The TrustAnchor100 provides security as automotive Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs upgrade thousands of electronic control units,” said Nuri Dagdeviren, vice president of Microchip’s secure products business unit. “The TA100, combined with the integrated software stack, provides customers with production-ready software that enables them to easily add security to any automotive module.”

development tools

TA100 provides an AUTOSAR-compatible MCAL driver that can be integrated into the AUTOSAR software protocol stack. TA100 provides a complete AUTOSAR reference protocol stack that enables automotive suppliers to deploy the latest encryption standards into automotive systems in a standard automotive production environment. TA100 also provides a MikroBUS™-compatible slot baseboard.

Availability

TA100 is available in 8-pin and 14-pin SOIC packages.
