The emerging superhero: C-V2X
5G is profoundly reshaping the mobile communications market, while also providing key basic wireless technology support for the emerging Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), which can significantly improve vehicle safety, reduce travel time, and improve fuel efficiency.
Cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) allows vehicles to communicate with each other and everything in the surrounding environment. With 360-degree non-line-of-sight performance, C-V2X improves road safety and will be the backbone of autonomous driving. Just like Superman with X-ray vision in the movie, C-V2X's recognition range can effectively penetrate walls and corners, and like the protagonist of the movie "The Six Million Dollar Man", it allows drivers to easily "see" pedestrians and vehicles in the distance.
To keep pace with technological innovation, the standards governing cellular technology have evolved over time. V2X was initially based on the Digital Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) standard and is now based on a derivative protocol (802.11P) of the 802.11 (Wi-Fi) wireless standard. Subsequently, V2X evolved into C-V2X, based on the LTE and 5G cellular 3GPP standards.
C-V2X is very beneficial to us in three basic aspects: hazard warning, road perception and traffic collaboration. Statistics from the US Department of Transportation predict that C-V2X can reduce 4.5 million car accidents each year. C-V2X can greatly shorten driving time and reach the destination quickly by enabling communication between all cars through traffic collaboration. Simple wireless technology will have a profound impact on human life!
Although still in the early stages, several automotive OEMs have announced demonstrations and deployments of C-V2X technology in upcoming vehicles. Over time, integrating C-V2X into vehicles will become mandatory, for example, Europe will require OEMs to support C-V2X to achieve an NCAP 5-star safety rating by 2024. Other regions around the world are also considering similar mandates and legislation.
The integration of C-V2X in vehicles requires not only very strong security, state-of-the-art wireless and baseband processing system-on-chip (SoC) technology, but also robust, automotive-grade certified memory in a very small footprint. Multi-chip package (MCP) memory, which integrates automotive-grade certified DRAM and flash memory, is critical to the successful implementation of C-V2X in vehicles.
Since C-V2X will allow drivers to be aware of the external environment and control vehicle operations, data encryption and data security are critical. Micron's unique Authenta™ security solution has embedded security features and provides root-of-trust functionality for non-volatile flash memory, thereby reducing the threat of zero-day vulnerabilities.
Of course, as with all superheroes, with great power comes great responsibility.
