What are the advantages of FPGA? Where are the advantages of FPGA manifested? [Copy link]

FPGA is developed on the basis of PAL, GAL and other logic devices. Compared with the previous PAL, GAL, etc., FPGA is larger in scale and can replace dozens or even thousands of general-purpose IC chips. It can be said that FPGA chips are one of the best choices for small-batch systems to improve system integration and reliability. FPGA chips can be called customizable special ASIC chips. In addition to the characteristics of ASIC, they also have the following advantages: With the continuous improvement of VlSI (Very Large Scale IC) technology, a single chip can accommodate millions of transistors, which makes the functions that FPGA chips can achieve more and more powerful, and can also achieve system integration. FPGA chips are 100% tested before leaving the factory, so designers do not need to bear the risk and cost of chip production. Designers only need to complete the final functional design of the chip in their own laboratories through the relevant software and hardware environment. Therefore, the capital investment of FPGA is small, saving a lot of potential expenses. Users can repeatedly program, erase, use, or use different software to achieve different functions without changing the peripheral circuit. The FPGA software package has a full range of products such as various input tools, simulation tools, layout design tools and programmers. Circuit designers can complete circuit input, compilation, optimization, simulation, and final chip production in a very short time. When circuit designers use FPGA for circuit design, they do not need to have in-depth knowledge of specialized IC (integrated circuit). FPGA software is easy to learn and use.

The biggest feature of FPGA is direct programming of hardware circuits, parallel computing, and fast computing speed. ASIC chips are customized application-specific integrated circuits. Once they leave the factory, the circuits are fixed and cannot be programmed. MCU generally integrates multiple functional modules, and the corresponding modules can be called through configuration registers. However, configuring registers or using MCU does not change the hardware circuit of MCU. It is generally written in C language, which is finally converted into machine commands to configure registers.  Details Published on 2019-2-10 22:38

I feel that the author should have just started, or has this intention. The author should be referring to the comparison between FPGA and MCU or DSP. I also thought that the peripherals of MCU development board and FPGA development board are basically the same, so why use FPGA. This may be because our vision is not broad. For example, FPGA is incomparable in terms of high speed. The specific advantages and disadvantages require the author to practice, accumulate and understand continuously. It is not something that can be understood by anyone. If the author has the opportunity, he should study hard and slowly realize its advantages and disadvantages.

Every inch has its own strengths and every ruler has its own weaknesses. The biggest advantage of FPGA is parallelism.
