On the evening of April 14, Apple announced today that its global suppliers more than doubled their use of clean energy last year. Currently, more than 10 GW of the nearly 16 GW of clean energy committed to be used in the coming years has been put into use.

In China, supplier participation in Apple’s clean energy program has grown by nearly 75% over the past year, with a total of 55 Chinese production partners now committing to use only clean energy, representing nearly all of Apple’s major suppliers headquartered in China.

To date, 213 major Apple production partners have committed to using renewable energy to produce Apple products.

In 2021, renewable energy projects that have been connected to the grid in Apple's supply chain avoided 13.9 million tons of carbon emissions equivalent, equivalent to removing 3 million cars from the road in a year. In China, 23 new suppliers joined the program last year. This includes Shenzhen Hengchuang Ruineng Environmental Protection Technology, which has just joined the clean energy program and will use clean energy in a closed-loop recycling process.

“We are pleased to work with local companies to support their green transformation,” said Ge Yue, Apple’s vice president and managing director of Greater China. “Apple is committed to leading the way in environmental protection, addressing climate change, and protecting our shared precious resources.”

Chinese companies are adopting a variety of clean energy solutions. Many companies are building on-site solar installations, such as MFLEX in Jiangsu, and Yutong Packaging Technology Co., Ltd. in Guangdong, Henan and Jiangsu.

In 2018, Apple launched the China Clean Energy Fund, which has enabled many suppliers to access more renewable energy projects. It is also through this fund that Apple and its suppliers have jointly invested in 465 megawatts of clean energy.

In addition to the clean energy commitments by its 213 suppliers, Apple is also investing directly in renewable energy projects around the world, including nearly 500 megawatts of solar and wind projects in China and Japan, as part of its upstream emissions reduction program.

To support companies in their transition to clean energy, Apple is sharing data with them and providing tailored training materials to companies in different markets. These resources are helping companies around the world accelerate the adoption of new clean energy solutions.
