According to Bloomberg on February 28, Apple has shelved and canceled all development plans for self-driving electric vehicles. The Apple car project was more than a decade in the making, with millions of dollars invested during that time, but it was ultimately decided that it was not a viable project.
Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams issued an internal letter informing the car project team of approximately 2,000 people that the project has been cancelled.
The research and development of Apple's car is nearing completion, and many developers will be transferred to Apple's artificial intelligence department to engage in the research and development of generative artificial intelligence under the leadership of artificial intelligence director John Giannandrea.
There are many hardware engineers and car designers on the Apple car team, and some of them have been transferred to other departments at Apple, while the remaining employees are facing layoffs.
In January this year, Bloomberg reported that the Apple car project bowed to reality, lowered its research and development goals, and postponed submission until 2028.
News of the Apple car first appeared in 2014, and since then, the project has been plagued by problems. Priorities changed and evolved many times, and Apple changed its leadership multiple times due to internal strife. In 2021, Apple Watch CEO Kevin Lynch took over the project. He worked hard to reduce the size of the project and lowered the development goals to make it more achievable.
According to Bloomberg, senior Apple executives made the decision to terminate the Apple Car project in recent weeks.
