TSMC officially confirmed this week that its 3nm process (also known as N3) mass production has been delayed by about 3 to 4 months, and this problem has seriously affected its customers. This means that Apple's 2022 iPhone will miss the N3 node and can only adopt N4.
It was previously reported that Apple has received a 4nm chip order from TSMC, which is expected to start production in the fourth quarter of 2021, and has also placed a 3nm order. According to Seeking Alpha, TSMC plans to mass-produce 3 million chips in the second half of next year, and these chips are likely to be used in the iPhone 14 series.
Like TSMC, Samsung is also facing production difficulties with the 3nm GAA process, so its mainstream products next year will still use 4nm. In addition, if TSMC cannot solve the yield problem in the short term, the A16 Bionic and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 898/Plus may both be manufactured using the 4nm process.
IT Home learned that TSMC also plans to manufacture 2nm chips for the iPhone in 2024, but due to delays in its 3nm technology, subsequent advanced technologies may be further delayed.
