A new report claims that in the first quarter of 2021, the iPhone 12 series had more active users than the iPhone 11 in the same period of 2020.
Following previous reports that the iPhone 12 was the best-selling 5G smartphone in October, Counterpoint Research has now released its statement for the first quarter of 2021. While Apple has not released any iPhone sales figures since 2018, making it difficult to verify the accuracy of these assumptions, Counterpoint estimates that the overall installed base grew by 2% last year.
According to Counterpoint, the iPhone 11 had a total share of 15% among active iPhone users as of the first quarter of 2020. The iPhone 12 had a share of 16%.
“It may be noted here that the launch date of the iPhone 12 series is one month later than that of the iPhone 11 series,” Counterpoint Research noted. “Also, the iPhone 12 series also competes with the low-end iPhone SE 2020.”
Counterpoint did not specify what the difference in active user base was between the first quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020. However, it claimed that the iPhone 11 performed better than that year's iPhone XS series.
The research firm also noted that its data showed that a higher proportion of iPhone 12 Pro users were choosing the iPhone 12 Pro Max over the equivalent iPhone 11 Pro model.
“In the first quarter of 2020, iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max accounted for 44% of the installed base, while in the first quarter of 2021, iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max accounted for 54% of the installed base,” Counterpoint Research said.
