A study conducted by Juniper Research shows that the number of eSIM cards installed in devices will increase from 1.2 billion in 2021 to 3.4 billion in 2025, mainly due to devices from Apple and Google.
An eSIM is a small module embedded directly into a device that provides cellular connectivity by storing multiple network operator profiles, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card in a pop-up tray.
By 2025, eSIM adoption in devices is expected to increase by 180%, with 94% of global eSIM installations driven by the consumer electronics industry. Other contributors include industry and the public sector.
While widespread adoption of the eSIM framework is dependent on network operators, Apple and Google devices are highlighted as the most important drivers of adoption, accelerating the growth of the technology in the industrial and public sectors. The research report urges device manufacturers to put more pressure on operators to support the eSIM framework and accelerate market maturity.
Apple was the first to commercialize eSIM technology with the release of the cellular Apple Watch Series 3. Since then, eSIM has rapidly spread to iPad Pro and iPhone in 2018.
