At 6:09 p.m. local time on March 20, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in the sea near Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The tremor was felt in Tokyo and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning. As of 19:30 local time, all tsunami warnings had been lifted.

According to Japanese media reports, many people have been injured in the earthquake.

As there are many nuclear power plants near the area, local authorities urgently inspected the damage after the earthquake. According to the Atomic Regulation Agency of Japan, as of now, there are no abnormalities in nuclear facilities including the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, Fukushima No. 2 Nuclear Power Plant and Tokai No. 2 Nuclear Power Plant, and the nuclear radiation monitoring values in the above-mentioned places have not changed.

Just last month, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred in the offshore area of Fukushima, Japan, not far from the epicenter of this earthquake, causing widespread water and power outages. Many nearby semiconductor companies have shut down their factories. For example, a factory in Reiss Ibaraki that mainly produces automotive chips was forced to shut down to inspect its clean room. To make matters worse, the Reiss Ibaraki factory recently suffered a fire (Friday) that caused it to shut down again. This earthquake may cause further delays in its resumption of work.

The magnitude of this earthquake is similar to the last one, and nearby semiconductor companies may be affected again. Considering the recent tight supply of semiconductors, the earthquake in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan may further aggravate the chip shortage crisis.
