According to Brazil Tech, at a public hearing on the 5G working group held by Congress on Tuesday (March 9), Brazilian Communications Minister Fabio Faria said that Huawei will not be a supplier of dedicated communications networks used by the government, but will not be banned from operating elsewhere in the country.
Faria said Huawei was not suitable to participate in the upcoming 5G auction scheduled for June to determine who will build Brazil's government network. He said Huawei did not meet the bidding requirements recently set out by Brazil's telecom regulator Anatel.
On February 25 this year, Anatel passed the rules for the 5G spectrum auction, which did not impose any restrictions on Huawei as an equipment supplier. The agency has said that if Huawei is excluded, they will spend billions of dollars to replace equipment. After all, Huawei provides 50% of 3G and 4G network equipment in Brazil.
At that time, foreign media predicted that Brazil would attach some costly conditions to the auction rules, one of which was to build a separate safety network for the government.
Under the lobbying and pressure of the United States, many countries have announced restrictions on Huawei's participation in 5G network construction, causing Huawei to lose to Western competitors in the network equipment market outside of China. The latest data from research firm Dell'Oro Group shows that Huawei's share of global (excluding China) wireless equipment sales revenue fell by 2 percentage points last year, with a 20% share lagging behind Ericsson's 35% and Nokia's 25%.
