After the release of Apple's iOS system, most mobile phones can be quickly upgraded to the latest version. In contrast, Android's system upgrade is very fragmented. Google has no say, and it depends on whether the mobile phone manufacturer supports it. In Android 12, Google will further improve the update method, and ART runtime can be upgraded as an independent module.
Upgrading the Android system is a complicated process, involving both hardware drivers and system codes. It is not as easy as upgrading Windows. Therefore, in Android 10, Google introduced the Project Mainline plan, which expands the Project Treble upgrade plan introduced in the previous generations of Android 8.0 to more, and divides different system functions into independent modules, so that it can be upgraded autonomously without being restricted by OEM manufacturers, and distinguished from the functions added by the latter.
In Android 11, Google has introduced 25 Project Mainline modules, and in this year's Android S/Android 12 system, Google developers stated that ART (Android Runtime) will be used as a Project Mainline module.
ART is one of the core functions of the Android system, responsible for converting the bytecode of Android applications into local instructions. If this function also becomes modular, Google can update the system itself through the Play Store without going through OEM channels and will not be restricted by manufacturers, which will help improve the unity of the Android system.
