According to The Verge, Microsoft once tested a Windows XP theme that was very similar to Mac OS X's Aqua GUI.
A recent Windows XP source code leak revealed various unreleased themes that Microsoft was developing in 2000, when it was competing fiercely with Apple for desktop operating systems.
One of the themes, codenamed "Candy," shows a design similar to Apple's Aqua interface, which was first introduced at the Macworld Conference & Expo in 2000. Aqua is Apple's iconic design, and although the theme is incomplete, the Windows XP Start button and various buttons and UI elements are clearly similar to Apple's Aqua.
The theme was never released and was marked as "for internal use only." Windows developers appear to have used the theme as a placeholder to build the theme engine for Windows XP.
