Smartphone shipments underperformed in the latest quarter due to the coronavirus pandemic, which not only led to a decline in smartphone shipments but also affected shipments of components.
According to the latest report from UBI Research, shipments of OLED display panels for smartphones fell to 87 million units in the second quarter of this year, a 23.1% decrease compared to the same period last year.
The second quarter of 2020 figures also fell by 17% compared to the first quarter figures. The report said that OLED panels fell by about 40.3% year-on-year in the second quarter.
Although OLED panel shipments declined, this was offset to some extent by the growth of flexible OLED panels. The report also showed that flexible OLED panel shipments increased by 38% compared to last year.
The report states that the decline in rigid OLED panel shipments is the result of fewer mid-range smartphones launched by Chinese brands in the second quarter of this year. As they focus more on flagship devices, flexible OLED panel shipments have grown.
