On July 14, the UK announced restrictions on Huawei's participation in its 5G construction.
In this regard, according to CCTV news, Gao Feng, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, responded at a regular press conference held by the Ministry of Commerce today (16th) that China firmly opposes the British government's decision to exclude Chinese companies from the construction of 5G networks. The discriminatory practices of the British side run counter to the free trade principles that the UK has always advocated, seriously violate the rules of the World Trade Organization, seriously undermine China's confidence in investing in the UK, seriously affect the atmosphere of China-UK economic and trade cooperation, and seriously damage the UK's reputation and status in the international trade system. China is evaluating the UK's practice of abandoning the free trade policy and will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.
In addition, Gao Feng emphasized, "We urge the UK to proceed from the overall situation of bilateral cooperation, focus on the long-term, take pragmatic measures, correct wrong decisions, provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies investing in the UK, and effectively maintain the good momentum of the development of China-UK economic and trade relations."
Yesterday (15th), a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to this matter, saying, "Without any solid evidence, the UK has used unfounded risks as an excuse to cooperate with the US in repeatedly discriminating against and excluding Chinese companies. This blatantly violates the principles of market economy and free trade rules, violates the relevant commitments made by the UK, seriously damages the legitimate interests of Chinese companies, and seriously impacts the mutual trust basis of China-UK cooperation. China strongly opposes this."
