This week, the MPEG group announced the completion of MPEG-5 Essential Video Coding (EVC), also known as the ISO/IEC 23094-1 standard, and as a result, EVC has been promoted to Final International Standard (FDIS) status.

It is reported that the standard was jointly formulated by Huawei, Qualcomm, Samsung and other companies, and these companies will also receive the first batch of support.

MPEG-5 EVC is another epoch-making coding standard following MPEG-1 in 1993 (mainly used for CD video), MPEG-2 in 1995 (mainly used for DVD and digital broadcasting), MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264) in 2003, and MPEG HEVC (H.265) in 2013.

According to reports, MPEG-5 EVC has two layers: Layer 1 (basic mode) and Layer 2 (main mode). Layer 1 is free of licensing fees, while Layer 2 contains all technical components and supports individual opening and closing, with at least 120 frames and 10-bit accuracy.

Test data shows that MPEG-5 EVC has the same video quality as H.265 in main mode, but the average bit rate is reduced by 26%; compared with H.264, the basic mode has an average bit rate reduction of 31% and a decoding time reduction of 60%.

Huawei, Qualcomm and Samsung welcomed the launch of MPEG-5 EVC. In addition to the initial support, the three major contributors also stated that they would take various measures to expand the influence of the new standard.
