Xiaomi executive explains Porsche Design and Porsche: They are two different companies

Yu Chengdong said that the Xiaomi MIX Alpha concept phone has no practical value, which made Lu Weibing, vice president of Xiaomi Group and general manager of Redmi brand, very angry. He questioned Yu Chengdong:

"If the surround screen has no 'practical value', then what is the 'practical value' of sticking a foreign license plate on a phone and selling it for an extra 10,000 yuan?"

What Lu Weibing said here, "A foreign license plate put on the phone will sell for an extra 10,000 yuan," refers to the Huawei Mate30 RS Porsche Design, which has 12GB+512GB of storage and is priced at 12,999 yuan.

Seeing that Lu Weibing couldn't tell the difference between Porsche Design and Porsche, another Xiaomi executive came out to explain.

The Xiaomi executive is Wang Yang, former research director of IHS iSuppli China and current strategic research director of Xiaomi's mobile phone department. He said:

"Porsche Design makes accessories for Porsche cars. Its founder is the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of Porsche AG and the inventor of the Porsche 911. Porsche Design and Porsche Automobile are two different companies."

After being reminded by netizens and Wang Yang, Lu Weibing suddenly realized what was going on, so he posted another Weibo post, criticizing Huawei for deliberately confusing Porsche Design with Porsche:

"Mobile phone manufacturers have the responsibility and obligation to tell consumers whether the foreign brand you are using is a luxury car brand or a design family brand with the same name as the car brand. This question should not be avoided, let alone deliberately confusing. The right to know should be returned to users. Many people spend an extra 10,000 yuan to buy a branded mobile phone, but in the end it has nothing to do with a luxury car license plate. What does it count as?"
