On May 5, 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a "Basic Telecommunications Business License" to China Radio and Television, approving China Radio and Television to operate domestic Internet data transmission services and domestic communications facilities services nationwide. It also allowed China Radio and Television Network Co., Ltd. to authorize its holding subsidiary China Cable Television Network Co., Ltd. to operate the above two basic telecommunications services nationwide. This means that China Radio and Television has become the fourth largest basic telecommunications operator after China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.

On November 22, 2018, at the "On-site Meeting on Promoting the Construction of 'Smart Radio and Television' Nationwide", Nie Chenxi, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the State Administration of Radio and Television, said in his speech, "The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has agreed to the participation of China Radio and Television Network in 5G construction, and State Grid Corporation is applying for mobile communications qualifications and 5G licenses." In terms of content resources, for example, in 4K, the radio and television industry has strong industry appeal and content production capabilities. In October 2018, China Central Radio and Television established the first 4K TV channel in China. This is a breakthrough from scratch in the field of ultra-high definition, and it has played a clear demonstration and leading role in the entire industry.
