Infineon Technologies AIROC™ Wi-Fi Bluetooth combo chip provides reliable, high-performance connectivity for new TomTom satellite navigation
Developed by positioning technology company TomTom, the TomTom GO Discover is one of the fastest and most powerful satellite navigation devices on the market. The satellite navigation is available with 5-, 6- and 7-inch displays and uses the AIROC™ CYW43455 Wi-Fi Bluetooth combo chip from Infineon Technologies AG. The AIROC wireless solution combines Wi-Fi 5 (802.11 ac) and Bluetooth 5.0 technologies in a single chip, adding fast and stable wireless network connections, which is essential for navigation devices. Infineon's AIROC family includes several wireless solutions that provide reliable, high-performance connections.
TomTom GO Discover supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, and the map update download speed is 3 times faster than other navigation devices. In addition, TomTom GO Discover's built-in Bluetooth can be connected to a smartphone, allowing users to obtain real-time traffic information and TomTom's high-quality online services at any time, including the latest fuel prices, parking spaces, and electric vehicle charging station locations.
Mike Schoofs, Managing Director of TomTom Consumer Products, said: “The TomTom GO Discover is designed with safety in mind to make every journey more enjoyable. With Infineon’s AIROC wireless connectivity solution, we have successfully added a powerful and fast wireless interface to the satellite navigation device, allowing traffic and map information to be regularly updated. This chip allows us to combine our deep understanding of drivers’ needs with the latest and most powerful technology.”
“The low-power products in the AIROC wireless connectivity portfolio use advanced design and process technologies to reduce power consumption during use and in sleep mode,” said Sivaram Trikutam, Senior Director of Infineon’s IoT Computing and Wireless Division. “In addition, the 1x1 chip integrates advanced hardware processing and algorithms to optimize the collaboration of WiFi and Bluetooth for best performance. This makes the chip ideal for car navigation units that require a reliable wireless interface to provide drivers with the latest road conditions and other relevant information.”
The AIROC wireless connection product series provides 1x1 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Bluetooth connections, operating in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. The Wi-Fi 5 mode supports 20 MHz, 40 MHz, and 80 MHz channels, with data rates up to 433.3 Mbps, while also supporting all data rates specified by 802.11a/b/g/n. This can triple the throughput and transmission speed of wireless LANs and greatly improve scalability.
High data rates are particularly beneficial when streaming high-definition video, transferring and storing files, and extending the range of Wi-Fi networks. In addition, the Wi-Fi 5 specification helps extend battery life. When the Wi-Fi interface is exchanging data with the access point at a high transmission rate, the radio will immediately deactivate and return to sleep mode, reducing overall power consumption.
