Recently, four students from the Diocesan Boys' School in Hong Kong developed an ultra-small humanoid robot with a height of only 141 mm , which once again broke the record of "the world's smallest humanoid robot" held by Zain Ahmad Qureshi of Pakistan.
The team is committed to developing a "small, low-cost, rechargeable, and programmable" STEAM education platform. This "small and beautiful" design concept has brought them unprecedented challenges in the production of humanoid robots.
To make a humanoid robot with various complex functions into an ultra-small volume of 141 mm, the design and production requirements are very strict. The various components and structures must be precisely matched, and the selection of materials is also extremely important. We need to consider how to minimize the overall weight while ensuring strength and functionality, and the programming and control parts must also be simple and efficient.
The team completed the robot design through CAD and assembled the parts including acrylic panels and 3D printed parts in the school laboratory. They also worked with a motor and control system manufacturer to install a 16-channel control board on the back of the humanoid robot, which can be wirelessly controlled through onboard buttons or mobile devices. The robot also has leg and arm movement capabilities, can be programmed to dance and even play football, and a built-in 7.4V lithium battery is its power source.
In addition, the team members said that they do not care about commercial interests and hope to share their designs, source codes and production experience with the world on an open source basis. They hope to awaken the STEAM creativity of students and teachers, break the shackles of traditional education, and let children constantly stimulate innovative thinking from an early age, and actively apply it to practice to explore and change the world.
The spread of this open source culture and innovative consciousness may eventually give birth to the next robot that is 141 mm tall, or other technological miracles that we can hardly imagine.
